Beginning riders often have difficulties picking the right outfit. It happens that they come to riding lessons in baggy clothes, or on the contrary - they spend a fortune on professional clothes they don't really need. How to find the golden mean and what to wear to riding lessons at the riding school?

Horse riding is a demanding sport, where comfort and wearing clothes right for the weather should always be a priority. You should also remember that the clothes your wear to the stable will quickly get dirty, worn-out, and will require often washing. Because of these reasons, horseback riding lovers usually have several sets of outfits that they only wear to the stable or for a training session. What should you remember about while choosing an outfit for a riding lesson, or when you're just beginning your journey with equestrianism?

Usually, you can rent an equestrian helmet at the riding school, but if you know you will continue the lessons, it's best to buy your own - and that should be your first purchase because you must always wear a helmet while riding! You don't have to buy a very expensive helmet as your first one, however, you do need to prioritize your safety. You will find helmets from Horze, Busse, or Casco that are not over 100 euros. It is best not to buy a used helmet, as it might wear micro-damage that would affect the protection level.

Breeches or other close-fit riding pants

Breeches or breggings are the most comfortable and they are often strengthened (with short or full grip) pants that provide better adhesion in the saddle and prevent chafing. Below 75 euros, you will find many good and comfortable models (e.g. from HKM, Busse, or Kingsland), you can also buy used breeches. If you want to temporarily replace them with regular pants, choose comfortable, close-fit ones such as sweat pants or leggings with a high waist that do not chafe or restrict movements. Never ride in shorts and do not pick pants with loose legs.

Comfortable riding shoes

Namely, jodhpurs or any full comfortable shoes with stiff soles with no zippers on the inner side. Some riding schools are pretty strict about the footwear and you should learn how it is with yours before you take your first lesson. Avoid shoes that can get stuck in a stirrup (e.g. wide hiking boots) or make it difficult to lower your heel, do not ride in sandals. Jodhpurs are usually inexpensive (Horze offers some models at around 50 euros), so it's worth considering buying a pair of your own riding shoes at the beginning of your journey.

Chaps

They protect your legs from chafing on the saddle and they are very useful - especially since beginning riders often have unstable seat, which increases the risk of painful injuries. Chaps go over your breeches' legs. Up to 50 euros, you will find models that will be more than enough for start (Horze) and will improve the level of riding.

Equestrian accessories for various weather conditions

It is very important to pay attention to the atmospheric conditions. In the winter, you should wear layers, gloves, and warm socks. In the summer, you need to cover your shoulders so that you won't get them sunburned. In the spring, you might want to remember about a vest or jacket that will protect you from the wind. With a proper outfit, your rides will not only be more pleasant but also safer - and that is the most important thing.
