This year summer welcomed us with cold and cloudy weather that changed into waves of heat mid-season. Such a jump made it even more difficult to deal with high temperatures. Still, work with horses and everyday schedule will not wait for more favorable circumstances. Your steed wants to use the good sides of the season - meadows covered with grass, and riders want to spend the sunny days by their beloved steeds' sides. Thankfully, high temperatures can be bearable if... you are reasonable about them. It is good to apply 5 ways that would help you avoid the negative consequences of a hot summer.

1. Re-think the day's plan

In the summer, you should pay special attention to scheduling your days so that your horse and you do not spend time outside when the sun is highest in the sky. If you cannot give up on training sessions or lessons, you should plan them early in the morning or late in the evening (which might be an additional attraction for beginners!).

You should also remember about the dust on the paddock during hot days - it additionally hinders your horse's work and irritates his respiratory system. It is good to replace a standard training session with fieldwork - the woods are usually cooler and trees will protect you from the scorching sun. An additional attraction would be a nearby lake or river, so a perfect place for your horse to wallow.

2. Organize swimming or wallowing

Wallowing is a very special attraction for horse lovers of all ages! However, remember about safety measures and that some horses might be afraid of water. If there is no body of water nearby, you can organize a swim - it is an amazing way to cool your horse down that would bring him relief. Remember not to approach this task too enthusiastically. First, cool the horse's legs, then gradually water the rest of his body. If your horse is afraid of water flow from a garden hose, you can use a watering can.

3. Provide sun protection

If there are no bushes or trees on the paddock, there should be at least a shelter under which your horse could hide from the sun. A bit of shadow would be useful as animals, just like humans, can suffer heatstroke after being in the sun for too long! You should also think of planting some trees around the paddocks or even on them so that they could give natural shelter to your horse in the future - steeds love relaxing in such places.

4. Hydrate and give your horse electrolytes

  1. Over Horse Electro Horse 1,5KG electrolytes
  2. Electro Liquid Electro Liquid electrolytes for horses 1L
  3. LPC liquid electrolytes Hydraction 1L

We do not have to remind anybody that your horse needs to be constantly provided with access to fresh water. However, it is good to mention that you can add electrolytes to the water (or food). Your horse loses them when he sweats, while these substances are crucial for his proper functioning - they are responsible for the work of the nervous and digestive systems. The shortage of electrolytes increases the risk of injuries. Supplementing these elements and minerals with special preparation in water would make your pet stronger, help him get through the heat waves, and improve post-effort regeneration, providing better shape for competitions or everyday training. In our equestrian store Equishop, you can find electrolytes in a convenient form of a powder or liquid.

5. Buy cooling rubs

  2. Veredus Ice Gel

If you have never heard of such specifics before, you should learn some! This type of product is amazing for swelling and minor injuries. It is also the perfect way to cool your horse's legs after training (you can use it after rinsing your horse's legs with cool water), which improves regeneration. During high temperatures, the preparations have another advantage - they bring relief. A good idea would be to place a cooling product in your stable's first aid bag/cabinet so it is always at hand.
