Chaps and riding boots serve a similar purpose, which is why beginners often face an issue - which to choose? Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of chaps and riding boots and make an informed decision!

Both riding boots and chaps are supposed to protect the rider's legs from chafing that might be caused by the saddle or stirrup leathers. It is a very important element of the equipment that influences the comfort of riding, which is why many beginning riders start looking for proper protection after just a few lessons. It is good to assess your real needs and adjust the equipment you use accordingly.

Chaps - pros and cons

Real chaps are leather protectors for western riding that go from the ankles all the way up to the groins. A more popular version of rider's legs protectors are chaps that are sometimes called leggings - covering the legs from ankles to knees, used by classic and recreational riders. You can match the chaps with jodhpur boots (short riding shoes) to create an alternative for riding boots.

The biggest advantage of chaps is that they're cheap - the prices range from a bit over 20 Euros (e.g. Horze chaps) but for the best leather models you will have to pay even over 50 Euros (e.g. Horze Quinton). Many people value their versatility and comfort of use - you can put them on right before a ride and take them off right after a training session, which can prove really convenient on hot summer days. The disadvantage of chaps is that they are less elegant than riding boots and that some models might get damaged sooner. However, with the low cost, buying a new pair shouldn't be a major issue.

Who can use chaps? Beginners and recreational riders, also kids. Chaps are also the perfect solution for people who spent a lot of time in the stable (e.g. they work in an equestrian facility) as taking them off and putting them on takes only seconds and you wouldn't have to walk in tall boots all the time.

Sometimes, young equestrian intrants wear high (knee) socks instead of chaps that go over the breeches. It is an okay solution for people who want to save a little money on the equipment and value good airflow during spring and summer. In winters, long socks may be worn with chaps to better protect yourself from cold.

Riding boots - pros and cons

Riding boots are tall shoes for horse riding, formerly used commonly e.g. by the cavalrymen. These are professional horse riding shoes reaching all the way to the rider's knee. They are required for higher rank competitions as a mandatory element of the rider's outfit.

Riding boots surely call attention - they are elegant and perfectly complete the rider's outfit. Properly fitted will allow you for more comfortable and precise use of riding aids. What is more, it is easier to wear spurs with riding boots. However, the disadvantage is that they can be very hot in spring and summer, especially if they are made of low-quality materials. They also have to be perfectly fitted to serve their purpose. The main obstacle in purchasing riding boots is their high price (sometimes a couple of hundred Euros). On the other side, however, perfectly chosen riding boots will serve you for at least a dozen years. Riding boots from Petrie provide comfort even during summers and to help you complete your look, they are available in brown and black. With some models, it is possible to personalize the boots to the rider's needs.

Who can wear riding boots? They are most commonly used by sportsmen and professional riders who need equipment of excellent quality, but also by people who ride many horses every day, spending long hours in the saddle.

Do you know which solution would be best for you now? If you're only beginning your adventure with horse riding or treat equestrianism recreationally, chaps would be just enough. If you're taking a step further - you want to take part in competitions or you train horses, riding boots would surely prove better for you.
