Horse riding is a beautiful sport with a long history, which for many becomes a wish-fulfillment. However, sometimes, our own ambitions and competitiveness cloud the ideals for which we started our adventure with this sport. Obviously, aiming at perfection is great, but... when it comes to working on ourselves! What are the habits characterizing a good rider?

Self-development, improving our good sides, trying to overcome our shortcomings - that's the very basis of becoming better at what we do. In equestrianism, good habits are especially important, because it is a "team" work - with an animal that is completely dependent on the rider. Our decisions influence not only the sports results but also the horse's well-being, who gives you his all. If you believe - as we do - that a good rider should work on her- or himself every single day, you probably wonder which habits are crucial in this sport

1. Your horse's well-being is always your main priority.

Horse riding usually comes along with people's love for horses, and no win is worth breaking the horse's trust and well-being. The rider should always remember to properly prepare the horse for a ride or training session in every detail - equipment they use, time of work, advancement level - they always should be adjusted to the given horse. You cannot omit work from the ground, high-quality fodder, and regular visits from the blacksmith and veterinarian. A well-tended horse is your best showcase and pride - personally, and for the stable as well.

2. I learn every day!

A good rider never believes he or she knows everything. Instead, they learn their whole lives - about horses (their health, behavior, proper diet), movement biomechanics, and discipline. What is more, they want to improve their abilities, attending workshops and training courses, taking part in sessions with excellent coaches. They are able to take on constructive criticism (even though it still can be difficult) and learn from it. Only with constant learning, can we develop and be better.

3. I am improving not only during training.

Equestrianism requires constant work on yourself. Like with every other sport, it requires regular training - not only in the saddle! Swimming, stretching, gym, running - all these will help you improve your condition, flexibility, and strength that are necessary for horse riding. And because equestrianism will also require keeping cool blood at all times, we recommend learning techniques of stress control, patience, and empathy.

4. I tend to my equipment and always properly fit it.

The list of equestrian equipment is long. Each element has to be thought through and should perfectly fit your horse - we all know that a wrongly fitted saddle or wrongly put horse wraps would rather cause more harm than good. Horse riding is a very elegant sport and the rider needs to make sure that each element is perfectly fitted and matched - both in his or her outfit and the horse's trappings. Tending to the equipment is also practical - because the equestrian accessories can be very expensive, its proper maintenance and keeping it in the proper state will serve you right.

Regardless if you take part in dressage or jumping competition, if you're a fan of racing or western riding, or even if you are just beginning the adventure with horse riding, you should live by these four points!
