If you're wondering how to get better at horseback riding, start with regular exercise! And not only during training. There are simple exercises you can do at home, too. Find out which ones you should include in your daily routine.

Horse riders usually don't complain about lack of movement - with horses, there is always something to do. Cleaning before a ride, bedding the stall, tidying the stable, and we don't even notice how much time we spend being physically active. But if you don't own a horse and you ride only once or twice a week, or you simply want to exercise to improve your seat and shape, we recommend getting the proper amount of exercise every day. There are plenty of options to choose from.

Why is it worth it? Thanks to a better physical condition, the trainings, trail riding or rallies will be less tiring and you will be able to recover faster after exercising. The development of the deep muscles will positively affect your balance and seat, and as a result, your communication with the horse and your performance. Through regular exercise, you are more likely to see progress in horse riding, but you will also notice benefits in your everyday life. Improved well-being, more energy, better posture - all this thanks to the exercises you can do in your own house, on the balcony or in the garden.

1. Home exercises for horse riders

Let's remember that horse riding is an activity that involves the whole body, which is why it is worth doing exercises for various muscle groups, in particular the deep muscles, which are responsible for balancing and proper body posture. Thanks to working on those muscles you will become more resistant and less likely to get injured.

You do not need any professional equipment to work out at home. All you really need is a comfortable outfit and a solid surface. You should only consider buying an exercise mat, which will ensure stability and comfort.

Sample exercises that can be done at home:

  • plank, side plank with leg raise, or with pulling the knee up to the chest
  • side plank
  • sit-ups and other exercises for abdominal muscles
  • jumping jacks
  • lifting the straightened arms and legs while lying on your stomach (the so-called Superman Exercise)
  • kneeling on all fours and raising an opposite arm and an opposite leg (the Bird Dog exercise)

Tutorial videos for these and other exercises can easily be found online, which will certainly make it easier to work out regularly. But that's not all! Yoga and pilates are another great choice for equestrians. Yoga not only has a great effect on our body, but also on our mind - it helps to calm down, restore balance and reduce stress. Pilates, on the other hand, is an exercise that aims at smooth development of the whole body. Stretching is also a good choice. And it is best when you combine several types of exercise, mixing them during regular workouts.

It is up to you how long you exercise. Even a 15-minute exercise session every day can have a positive effect on the body, and longer sessions of about 40-70 minutes several times a week will give you great results. You can experiment with different forms of exercise and choose the ones that suit you best. Then, there is a bigger chance that you will stick to regular exercises and be more motivated.

2. Other activities that make you a better horseback rider

Any type of activity can contribute to progress in horseback riding. Certain types of exercise improve our shape and endurance, others increase strength and flexibility, and others teach speed and precision. There is something a rider can "get" out of in every sport! The following are worth considering:

  • squash
  • swimming
  • tennis
  • cycling
  • running
  • rollerblading
  • gym workout
  • dancing

Remember to choose the exercises in accordance with your physical shape and abilities. Begin with shorter workouts and gradually increase their intensity. Do not forget about rest and regeneration. Besides horse riding, other kinds of exercise can also give us a lot of fun and will certainly be beneficial to our health.
