Halloween – costumes for horses and riders!

Today is Halloween – a holiday celebrated in many countries, related to the All-Saints' Day and celebrated a day before it – that is on the 31^st of October. Halloween is primarily celebrated in the USA, Canada, Irland, and UK. The holiday came to Poland in the 90s and is becoming more and more popular.

If you want to celebrate Halloween at your stable, then you have to check out our list of costume ideas for you and your horse! :)

1. Scarecrow

A pumpkin, checkered pants, and a straw hat are a must for a scarecrow costume. For those who don’t have time to collect all those pieces, there’s a cute, minimalistic version – simply paint your horse’s hooves :)

2. Zombie

Very easy costume to do – all you need is black and red paint, old clothes that can be destroyed, and a little bit of creativity :)

3. Fairy, witch, and a dragon

Your only limitation is your imagination - you can become a forest elf, a good fairy, or a wicked witch. Your companion then must be a dragon. Transform your horse with a pair of horns, put back scales along the tail and mane, or maybe attach talons to the hooves. For those more daring and invested riders, there is a version to use a dye and paint the horse. Everything depends on you!

4. Skeleton

This costume will look best on a black or dark horse. You only need white paint (don’t use poster paint. Body paints for people are much safer – still, it’s a good idea to check if the paint will be safe for your horse. Simply put a small amount of paint on a horse, e.g., on a shoulder and observe the area for a few days and check for any allergic reactions. Having fun can’t ever come at the expense of a horse’s health.

5. Harry Potter

Maybe this costume doesn’t fall into the scary category but still perfectly fits the Halloween vibe. Magic, wizards, and fantastic creatures. What kind of character will you choose from J.K. Rowling’s books? Chesnuts will make a perfect Ron! :)

6. Headless Horseman

This figure is most known from a movie directed by Tom Burton in which the main character was played by Johnny Depp. The movie is also known for its breathtaking and dreamy imagery.

To become a Headless Horseman, you only need a carved pumpkin and a big trench coat :)

7. Día de Muertos

Dia de muertos (from Spanish – day of the dead) is the oldest religious and cultural Mexican holiday, which celebrates the afterlife of the dead and family ties. This holiday has a very joyful celebration form, during which people do characteristic face paintings and women wear flower crowns (made especially from Mexican marigolds).

8. The dark rider

This character can be found in many fantasy movies and books – incl. Nazgul from  The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien or The Night’s King from The Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.

9. Invisible Horse

Now that’s an idea outside the box! For this costume, you need an old headcollar, lead rope, and glue :)

10. Ghost

An idea for a last-minute costume. All you need is some old bed sheets and scissors :)

11. Vampire

If you have a black horse – or even better a Fresian, then your horse is already dressed up. You just need to transform yourself into a vampire. Get some old-fashioned clothes and put on some makeup – white face, fake blood – and you’re all set ;)
